The Gravity of Beginning

Acrylic on canvas

We talk about beginnings as if they are light things. Fresh starts. Clean slates. But the first step carries the weight of everything that might follow.
The Gravity of Beginning by Taylor McLendon. Acrylic on canvas. We talk about beginnings as if they are light things. Fresh starts. Clean slates. But the first step carries the weight of everything that might follow.

In The Gravity of Beginning, George Washington emerges through layers of black, gray, and white. His expression holds steady while his coat dissolves into long vertical drips. I wanted that tension between appearing certain and carrying something that has not yet taken shape.

This painting considers the responsibility of beginning something others will inherit. What we build carries our intentions, our limitations, and consequences we may never live to see.
