The Cost of Preservation

Acrylic on canvas

Holding something together can take more out of us than anyone ever sees.
The Cost of Preservation by Taylor McLendon. Acrylic on canvas. Holding something together can take more out of us than anyone ever sees.

In The Cost of Preservation, Abraham Lincoln’s face becomes a place to consider that burden. Layers of gray and white emerge from a dark background, while marks trail downward through his shoulders.

I wanted the weight to show. The exhaustion, the resolve, the humanity beneath a face we recognize so easily. This painting asks what it costs to preserve something larger than ourselves, and how much of that cost remains invisible once history turns a person into a monument.
