What It Took to Win

Acrylic on canvas

We remember the raised hand. The victory sign. The moment someone could finally say we made it. What gets harder to see is everything carried into that moment.
What It Took to Win by Taylor McLendon. Acrylic on canvas. We remember the raised hand. The victory sign. The moment someone could finally say we made it. What gets harder to see is everything carried into that moment.

In What It Took to Win, Winston Churchill’s familiar gesture rises above a portrait built in black, gray, and white. His expression holds a sense of triumph while the paint runs downward through his coat. That tension is where this painting lives.

I wanted to leave room for what celebration cannot resolve. The exhaustion, the losses, the parts of ourselves that do not return simply because the struggle has ended. What did winning ask of us, and what are we still carrying afterward?
