The Burden of Being Built

The Burden of Being Built by Taylor McLendon. Acrylic on canvas. The Tin Man raising his axe behind his head against a golden-yellow ground.

The Tin Man raises an axe behind his head, caught between the strength he is expected to carry and the vulnerability his metal body cannot hide. Against the golden-yellow ground, his dark, roughly built form seems to bear more than its own weight.

The Burden of Being considers what it means to be shaped by expectation: to keep standing, keep performing, and carry the parts of yourself that others may never see. The raised axe becomes a sign of that pressure, while the Tin Man’s expression hints at the person still present beneath it.
